Denmark assumes the Presidency of the Council of the European Union

In a month, the official opening of Denmark’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union will take place. During the Danish presidency, a number of large events will take place from July till December 2025 with attendance from the Danish government, the European Commission, European heads of state or government, as well as members of the Royal House of Denmark. 

“Denmark assumes the Presidency of the Council of the European Union at a pivotal moment in European history. It is a big opportunity for a small country like ours to make political impact and pave the way for a stronger Europe. We are ready to assume this important responsibility,” says Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen.

July 3rd: Visit by the European Commission and Official Opening Ceremony in Aarhus 
As part of the launch of Denmark’s EU Presidency, the European Commission College will visit Aarhus on Thursday, July 3rd. 

The official opening begins at Aarhus University with a meeting between the Commission and the Danish government and a press conference with the president of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen and Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen. 

Afterwards, Their Majesties the King and Queen will join the president of the European Commission and the Prime Minister at the art museum ARoS.

In the afternoon, the commissioners, along with the Danish government, will tour Aarhus Harbour on a site visit focusing on the green transition in the shipping sector. Then, the King and Queen will host a reception on the Royal Yacht Dannebrog.
In the evening an official opening ceremony will be held at Aarhus City Hall, with attendance from the King and Queen and speeches by the Prime Minister and the president of the European Commission among others. There will also be musical performances. 

Concurrent to the opening ceremony at City Hall, Aarhus hosts a public European street festival in the City Hall Park with concerts, debate, and communal dining.

October 1st and 2nd: Summits in Copenhagen 
On October 1st, the Prime Minister hosts an informal meeting at Christiansborg Palace for heads of state or government of the 27 EU Member States. At informal meetings, cooperation within the EU and key political issues are discussed. 

On the evening of October 1st, the King and Queen host a reception at Amalienborg Palace.

The following day the seventh meeting of the European Political Community (EPC) will take place at the Bella Center in Copenhagen. The EPC meeting is expected to be attended by around 50 delegations, including European heads of state or government and representatives from NATO, EU institutions, the Council of Europe, and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE).
